What is FiOS?
FiOS is a fiber to the premises (FTTP) telecommunications service offered in the United States by Verizon. According to Verizon’s Trademark, FiOS is a Gaelic word for “knowledge”. Also, FiOS is an abbreviation of Fiber Optic Service. Verizon has attracted consumer and media attention in the area of broadband Internet access, as the first major U.S. carrier to offer such a service. Verizon has also launched a television service FiOS TVwith its fiber optic lines, and is expected to become a major competition of local cable television companies over the next 10 years. It will compete with current Triple Play offers, where the local cable company offers broadband Internet access, digital cable, and VoIP telephone service.
Inception
FiOS started as a pilot program in Keller, Texas, but availability of the Internet service has expanded to Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, Florida, California, Oregon, Washington the list goes on….. The FiOS TV service has launched in some of these states and will continue to expand its reach over the coming months.

Fios Fiber
FiOS has set the stage for a major change in broadband services in the US. Although you only hear about Fios TV and Fios Internet, this Verizon venture will set in motion a change that is bound to bring the US consumer market up to par with its European and Asian counterparts. Did you know the US is rated about 13th over all in the developed world as pertains to this market? We call ourselves innovators yet we let Bureaucracy clip our wings.
Regulation
The Telecom industry has been heavily regulated for years. Since this sector tends to draw road maps for the next big Techno trend, the US market has become victim of its past successes. Our European and Asian counterparts have seized on this and in a few years have managed to gain the upper hand. Verizon with its FTTP (Fiber to the Premises) Network is poised to make some positive strides.
See……. Once upon a time, Uncle Sam heavily regulated Copper Wire thereby tying big Telecom’s hands. Verizon went around it by investing heavily (18 Billion to be exact in the next few years) in a new technology that is not wholly bound by copper regulations. Fiber Optics! I have become a big Ivan Seidenberg (Verizon CEO) fan for this move. This has made possible what has only been a dream for us Techno geeks for years! Speed, Power, Ability to Dream, Bragging rights….the whole enchilada!
FioS
Fios is going to offer the equivalent of DSL on Steroids, Cable TV on Caffeine, Internet on Juice, Long Distance phone calls on, aaaah….. Baby Milk
That is right, Looked at your baby lately?? The possibilities of Fiber Optics are endless and that is the juice that powers Fios. The medical field is just salivating thinking of all the possibilities of this technology. What does Fios do with Fiber Optics your ask? It brings it to your State… It brings it to your City… It brings it to your Hood… It brings it to your Door step… It brings it to your Crib! What is FiOS? Answer…, It is the Future baby!
For those wondering about Packages & Prices. See the below. Sorry had to use the banners but it is easier for them to be updated when prices and packages change.
No FiOS at home Yet? No Problem!
For those in areas without Fios, don’t despair. You can get in on the fun too. You can get VoiceWing which is Verizon’s Broadband Phone service. VoiceWing is a Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) service that offers phone service over a broadband Internet connection like DSL, cable, or Verizon FiOS Internet service connection. You don’t have to have Fios to use Voicewing.
DSL
You can also get in on Verizon DSL. The speeds are slower than Fios but beats Dial-Up any day! How much do you pay for your DSL or Internet Cable? Check out the DSL package below. Chances are if you have Verizon DSL, you will be the First to know when Fios gets in your Area! At least that was my experience but could have simply been because Fios was new to everyone since I was in one of the first Fios markets
FiOS & Fiber Optics
Most major ISP central offices are already connected Via Fiber (this is not a fact) you will have to check with your Local office to verify this. They only need to run Fiber from the central office to your house to complete the Fiber loop! Fios is way ahead of the game compared to other ISP’s. Typically you get Fios Internet first and as soon as they get a Video Franchise in your community, Fios TV Baby! Caution, Depending on your community, Video Franchises can take a long time finalize. It all depends on the politicians in your town and how hard your Local cable company fights to keep competition out. Read about it in the Is Fios in My town Article
FiOS TV
100% Digital TV will be streaming down that new FIBER Optics Cable to your door step. Using the new MOCA Technology, it is possible to distribute TV, Internet and Phone through out your House. You can really take advantage of this if you use Media Manager-Read Verizon Unveils Home Media Digital Video Recorder for more info. You think you have seen Digital TV?? Wait till you get a hold of this baby. Even on my Non HD TV the picture is Mucho Clear!
From most reviews people say they see a significant improvement in picture quality when switching to Fios. Now that may or may not be because of the technology used to compress your Video. Jury still out on that
Important Note, to experience full HDTV, you will need an HDTV Television and an HD Set Top Box. Fios TV uses the Motorola QIP6200 HD FiOS TV Box as their basic HD Set Top Box. They also offer other STB’s. You can read all about Fios Equipment in FiOS Routers & TV Boxes

We currently have FIOS, but are considering cutting the tv portion and keeping only internet.
Will FIOS internet (internet only, no tv, no phone) interfere with OTA tv signal over the same coax?
The FIOS box ties in to coax at the wiring panel splitter, and the antenna ties in to the same coax network in the attic. The router connects to coax downstream.
It sounds like they use different frequencies of the spectrum, but I'd like to confirm before we pull the plug.
Yesterday was AT&T’s turn, and today it’s Verizon revealing its earnings for the first quarter of 2011. The company has reported $27 billion in consolidated revenue from its wireless and wireline businesses, which is up 5.3 percent year over year (on a non-GAAP basis), while profits rose to $1.4 billion. Fueling that growth was 1.8 million net additions to its wireless customer base, which now totals 88.4 million customers (and 104 million connections). It also saw 207,000 net additions to its FiOS internet business and 192,000 net additions to FiOS TV, which bring those total customer bases to 4.3 million and 3.7 million, respectively. As for that little iPhone 4 launch, Verizon says it’s resulted in 2.2 million activations — that’s quite a bit less that AT&T’s 3.6 million iPhone activations for the same quarter, as you’ll notice, although it does also have the benefit of a much cheaper iPhone 3GS in addition to the iPhone 4. Verizon also said that demand was "strong" for its new…

They are synonyms, and both have the vulgar meaning 'to f*ck'. But "bumsen" started out as an onomatopoeia, 'to make a banging noise', from the onomatopoeic "bums". "Ficken" was maybe originally a onomatopoeia too, and maybe the meanings of 'to move back and forth', 'to rub' were derived from it. Both were first attested in the 16th and 17th century, but fashions for slang come and go.
